As the hues of autumn unfold over the fields, we are gently reminded of yet another turn in the Wheel of the Year.
Autumn Equinox (also known as Mabon) is quickly approaching, reaching its peak on September 22nd (or early on the 23rd depending on where you are in the Northern Hemisphere).
This marks the second harvest in the seasonal trio, preceded by Lughnasadh and followed by Samhain. Mabon generously yields the bounties of Mother Earth, providing sustenance for the darker months ahead. It's a beautiful time to practice gratitude for abundance (in all its forms).
Mabon also signifies a period of preparation for the approaching winter, as we transition into a phase dominated by quiet, more feminine energy.
**For those residing in the Southern Hemisphere, the vibrant energies of Ostara, or the Spring Equinox, are now beckoning as you step into this blossoming season. Here is a post on Ostara.
The Equinoxes are the epitome of the balance point between the light and the dark. Mabon marks the union of these opposing forces and holds the transitory energy that brings us towards the dark times, until the Winter Solstice. It is also Libra season, the sign of the balancing scales, inviting us to welcome a harmonious and loving energy into our lives.
I have a deep appreciation for journaling and its ability to make clear that which has been clouded. Allow these questions to gently guide you, and if they resonate, feel free to incorporate additional inquiries that assist your inward process.
Here are some beautiful rituals crafted to nurture you and work with the season of autumn and the equinox portal. If feel called, share your experiences with me in Instagram DMs. I love hearing about other’s journeys and insights are truly valued.
1. Set Your Altar for Fall Equinox
As Mabon heralds a time of thankfulness and harvest, redesign your sacred space adorned with autumnal colors and symbols. Consider adding some objects or symbols that represent change, balance, or harmony. Light a candle, and take a moment to reflect on your blessings and lessons of the past months. Write them on beautiful leaves or natural paper, and offer them to the Earth, expressing gratitude for the abundance in your life.
2. Mabon Feast
Prepare a feast using seasonal, local ingredients. Set a table with autumnal colors and decorations, and invite your loved ones to share in this abundant meal. You can even encourage your guests to bring some dishes with them and create an abundant community dinner. Before eating, each person can express gratitude for the nourishment and experiences of the past year. As you feast, honour the balance of the season and the gifts it brings.
3. Mabon Meditation
On your sacred altar, light two candles, if possible one white and one black. Take a few deep breaths into the belly and then reflect on the energies of balance in your life. Think of both the light and the dark, acknowledging their presence within you. Before you begin, you might pose a question, or complete it with some reflections around the question: Where in your life can you welcome more ease and harmony? Feel free to journal or free-write your answers.
4. Ground in Nature
In reverence to nature's ever-changing tapestry, Mabon beckons us to pause and connect with the earth. Perhaps you might visit a nearby park, or a forest, or venture into the mountains, allowing yourself to be enveloped in the hues of nature. If the terrain is too chilly for barefoot exploration, gently place your hands on the ground or against a tree—perhaps even sharing an embrace. Inhale deeply, allowing the crisp, invigorating air to fill you. Offer gratitude to Mother Earth for its beauty and abundant blessings.
