Friday the 13th has become a feared day, associated with bad luck, tragedy, and even death. However, this day holds very powerful feminine energy, hidden and forgotten within the patriarchal system.
Perhaps the most well-known myth associated with the number 13 takes us back to “The Last Supper”. Think of Davinci’s painting of Jesus eating with his 12 apostles. This event led to the superstition that if 13 people gathered together to eat, one will die within a year.
Yet, very few speak about the idea that the feminine aspect of spirit, Mary Magdalene, was considered to be the 13th apostle. Looking at 13 from this perspective definitely brings new light to this number’s significance.
The number 13 has a very powerful spiritual meaning, symbolized beautifully in creation, fertility, and blood - mirrored in the nature, lunar and menstrual cycles. The feminine is cyclical, and just like a ,going inwards, rebirth always succeeds death.
There are 13 moon cycles in a year, and the majority of women experience 13 cycles per year. These lunar and menstrual cycles can complement each other. If a woman’s cycle is aligned with the lunar cycle, she will shed her lining on the New Moon and ovulate on the Full Moon.
Additionally, 13 is the day that falls (on average) in the middle of the moon cycle, representing the midway point between death and rebirth. That is precisely the midpoint between the New Moon, where a woman is shedding (death), and the Full Moon, where the woman is ovulating (rebirth). Everything is beautifully interconnected in nature.
In the past, when a woman bled, it was acknowledged that she embodied divine and magical powers. Her wisdom and ability to follow her intuition were deeply valued within the tribe. When she was ovulating, she was considered to have reached the peak of her power and was celebrated for her ability to receive, nourish and create new life.
According to Scandinavian mythology, Friday was named after Frigg - the goddess of marriage, who is associated with the Roman Goddess of love, Venus. Venus is the embodiment of divine feminine energy: beautiful, kind, creative, playful & sensual.
Even today, Friday is much loved because it offers us the chance to relax, play and recharge. On this day, Venus energy could be used to purposefully connect ourselves with our divine feminine energy and bring healing, art, and beauty into the world. Therefore, Friday is the perfect day to embrace Goddess energy and cherish its divinity.
Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess and was celebrated by honoring the feminine aspect of the divine. It marks an extremely powerful time of death and rebirth - connecting something new emerging and something old slipping away.
Therefore, Friday the 13th is actually a wonderful day for being in your joy, relishing the feminine aspects of your nature, and honoring the divine feminine within.
